Daniele Orsetti published at 3DTotal his new making of called „Private Charlie“. Daniele explains in the making of that the initial concept of „Private Charlie“ was created to teach character modeling during a master degree of computer graphics at the BigRock training center in Italy. Because he liked the character he decided to develop the idea further. In the making of Daniele describes the transforming of the original design of the character into version 2 where the hardest part was to create a cartoony but realistic character. He spent many hours watching references and after having the idea he started to rework the original Charlie.
He used ZBrush, Maya and Photoshop for creating this astonish image. In the making of you can read about his workflow and initial redesign of Charlie using ZBrush.
After Charlie he moved to other parts of the image where he found also new challenges: „The helicopter was a new challenge for me because I had never modeled something with that level of detail before. I started with a low poly proxy model, and in the first phase I followed a blueprint of a real chopper used in the Vietnam War: the Huey UH‐1B.“. The making of is very well written, starting from the early modeling part with a lot of tips, through UV mapping to Photoshop post production. Interesting reading for everyone and if you don’t know if it’s worth to read than look on the images below.
