The National Film Board of Canada has released McLaren’s Workshop, an iPad app that enables users to create films “using three different techniques used by Oscar-winning animator Normal McLaren”. The McLaren’s Workshop also gives users free access to 11 short documentaries that will guide them through McLaren’s impressive filmography, providing a thematic analysis of his work.
Make your own animated films with the PAPER CUT-OUTS Workshop, using the paper elements and original backgrounds McLaren created when he animated his classic film Le merle.
The SCRATCH ON FILM Workshop allows you to scratch, draw and paint free-form images directly onto film frames, a technique McLaren made famous through inspired films like Blinkity Blank and Begone Dull Care. $2.99
With this workshop, you can try your hand at the synthetic sound experiment McLaren undertook in his vibrant and award-winning Synchromy, whose music was created by drawing directly onto the soundtrack area of the film strip. $2.99
The McLaren’s Workshop requires iOS 5.1 and above. Though it can be run on an iPad 1, we recommend using an iPad 2 to fully enjoy all the app's features.
